Conclusion

What should a distributive justice theory aim to distribute? This chapter has argued that care represents one very plausible answer to this question. My central claims have been (1) that care ethics can be plausibly framed as a distributive justice theory; and (2) that it compares favourably with other distributive justice theories. Because of the heterogeneous character of the concept of care, care ethics avoids many of the standard criticisms of resource-based, welfare-based and capabilities-based distributive justice theories. Care ethics also seems better suited than other distributive justice frameworks for guiding our thinking about what justice means for children, disabled people, women and a number of other groups. It further has much to offer in thinking about development in poor and disadvantaged countries.

This chapter obviously does not settle the case. Debates about the proper standards of distributive justice are complex. My purpose here has been simply to survey contemporary debates about distributive justice, situate care ethics in relation to them, and offer some arguments for why political philosophers and others should take care ethics more seriously as a distributive justice theory.
